THE GREAT IMPOSTER

While Ottawa was trying to decide whether Canadian ground troops would be sent to fight in Korea, the Royal Canadian Navy had not been idle. The three destroyers assigned to the U.N. Forces in July 1950 had carried out patrol and escort duties through much of the first phase of the war. On July 4 a blockade of the entire coast of Korea was ordered by President Truman, and after the blockade was in force the small “gunboat navy” of North Korea was soon rendered ineffective. There was some danger from enemy planes, but no Canadian ship was ever attacked from the air. The biggest danger in the early stages of the conflict was from mines, and later, particularly after the Chinese entered the war, from shore batteries.

As has been mentioned earlier, the three Canadian destroyers originally sent to the Far East were the Cayuga, the Athabaskan, and the Sioux. Captain Jeffry Brock, the 37-year-old Vancouver-born captain of the Cayuga, was also commander, Canadian Destroyers Pacific.
